Wildflower poacher's in the Smoky Mountains
By Rev. Penny Hibbitts Mar. 27, 2013 With the tourist season fast approaching, we would like to remind tourists to take pictures if they would like a lasting memory of wildflower's, rather than picking, trampling, or digging them up. When you remove plants by the root they will not grow again which means the wildflower's could become extinct or worse you could destroy the ecosystem where they live without even realizing it. Poaching wildflower's is illegal Poaching wildflower's is illegal and punishable by law in the U.S. According to the National Park Service, U.S. Dept. of the Interior, plant poaching and exhaust fumes are causing serious problems of extinction for various flower's in the Smoky mountains with tourists causing the biggest losses by wandering off the established trails, unwittingly trampling wildflower's, and digging them up so they can transplant them at home. When the plants are dug up the roots no longer exist so the plants cannot replenish themselves. Presently the most showy wildflower's are usually taken and the flower's most often taken by tourists are: Flower's most targeted from Tourists
Flower's most in danger from automobile exhaust The most threatened flower's by hydrocarbons (a gas created by automobile exhaust fumes mixed with sunlight) are:
Poaching is stealing, taking something whether it be plant, tree, shrubbery, bird , or animal that does not belong to you, taken without permission, out of season or taking or killing something that is on the list of extinction, or could destroy an ecosystem. If you are vacationing, please take pictures and leave the plants in their natural environment. Most wildflower's can be purchased but some are very rare, native to a particular area, and an integral part of that ecosystem.
