What Forest's Have to Do With Our Atmosphere
What Forests have to do with our atmosphereWhat forests have to do with our atmosphere
By Rev. Penny Dean Hibbitts Mar. 27, 2013 Forests do much more than we give them credit for and we should do our best to preserve them. Not only are they a home for different birds, animals, organisms, and microorganisms but they are also used for camping, hunting, nature walks, bird watching, and most importantly our forests help clean the air that we breathe. USDA reports in July 2011, show that the trees in our forests help clean up the air we breath by absorbing 1/3 of the harmful carbon emissions we emit. The forest absorbs carbon emissions in much the same way a sponge absorbs water. Studies done all over the world and by U.S. Forest Service’s Northern Research Station. When forests absorb carbon emissions this is called a carbon sink. This carbon sink is world wide and the study's main point is: "Global forests have annually removed 2.4 billion tons of carbon and absorbed 8.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, or about one-third of fossil fuel emissions annually from the period of 1990-2007"(USDA, 2011). Preserving our forests does more than provide hunters with a hunting ground, home for animals and birds, and other organisms but they also clean the air you breathe.
